Full Fathom Five & Why I Boycott Their Books

Full Fathom Five & Why I Boycott Their Books

You’re probably thinking, “What the hell kind of post is this Debby? What’s Full Fathom Five? Why should I care?” Well that’s what I want to address in this post. Full Fathom Five irks the hell out of me, so I want to raise awareness about why that is. FFF is James Frey’s packaging company. You might know about James Frey. He wrote a “memoir” A Million Little Pieces which was later exposed as being largely fabricated. This led to a series of dramatic encounters with Oprah. He also recently got a $2 million dollar book deal for a book that is unquestionably a major […]

Book Review: A Mad, Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller (+ Giveaway!)

Book Review: A Mad, Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller (+ Giveaway!)

One of my goals for 2014 was to finally read some historical fiction. I don’t know what held me back from the genre, to be honest. I eat up historical fiction movies and TV series and adore them, but it never really occurred to me that I could also read some. Anyway. Enter A Mad, Wicked Folly. It popped up on my radar because of the lovely Christina and Gillian. Their reviews got me extremely pumped, and the synopsis sounded awesome, so I was all for it. It went on my most anticipated 2014 debuts list, and I even pre-ordered a copy. When it got […]

Top Ten Dystopias I Could/Couldn’t Handle

Top Ten Dystopias I Could/Couldn’t Handle

This is a meme from The Broke and the Bookish. For info about the topics and how to participate, click here. Today I thought I’d give my own little twist to this topic. Because – worlds I wouldn’t want to live in? That’s obviously going to be dystopias. But while there are some truly fearsome dystopias out there that I would never want to be stuck in, there are also some that I think I would thrive in. *flips hair* Obviously. Top 5 Dystopias I Couldn’t Handle 1. Dualed by Elsie Chapman Everyone in this world is a murderer. EVERYONE. I don’t want to kill people plzkthnx. […]

Book Review: The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

Book Review: The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

At it’s close-to-600 pages (seriously? was all of that necessary?), The House of Hades took me an upsettingly long time to read. Clearly I read the rest of the series when I was not on a semi-strict reading schedule of two books per week, heh. Also I had more free time then. But all in all, Rick Riordan delivers again. I don’t think he could write a seriously disappointing book for me. While this isn’t my favorite in the series, it was truly awesome. Although it had already been roughly 15 months since I read The Mark of Athena I had no trouble picking this […]

Manga Series Review: Maid-sama!

Manga Series Review: Maid-sama!

I don’t even really know where to begin with this. Honestly. I’ve been pretty much staring at a blinking cursor for 45 minutes. This is my favorite shoujo manga and it gives me all the feels in the world ever ever everrrr and how do you convey that well to other people?? Agh. Reviewing is hard. *pouts* Maid-sama! is the story of Misaki, a hardworking, over-achieving student. She serves as the student council president, where she tries to help transform her high school, which was previously an all boys’ school, into a girl-friendly environment. Fighting for the rights and safety of women, HELL YEAH. Meanwhile, […]

Music Match-Up #2: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Music Match-Up #2: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Every once in a while, I come across a song that fits perfectly with a book I’ve read. In this new feature, I’ll tell you about them! Divergent by Veronica Roth It’s fair to say that my love for the Divergent series has greatly waned. I absolutely loved the first book when I read it about two years ago, but then I read Insurgent right after its release in 2012 and… ugh. Just ugh. That book. I haven’t even bothered to pick up Allegiant yet, but I will at some point out of morbid curiosity so NO SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS PLEASE. I had to […]

ARC Book Review: Uninvited by Sophie Jordan

ARC Book Review: Uninvited by Sophie Jordan

While it may seem like the young adult dystopian genre is being inundated, I still keep reading them, hoping to find something fresh. And Uninvited definitely delivered on that front. It was a chilling and thrilling world, a future I could see the realism of, and it even put a ship on my ship list. With stories like this, there is still hope left for the genre. What got me hooked on this book is precisely the premise: a world where they have found a “kill” gene, Homicidal Tendency Syndrome (or HTS). People are tested for this gene, and if they test positive, they’re basically […]

Top Ten Things On My Reading Wishlist

Top Ten Things On My Reading Wishlist

This is a meme from The Broke and the Bookish. For info about the topics and how to participate, click here. Hahaha, I started this list subtly scratching my head because… well it’s a hard topic! Sure, there are plenty of things I want to see in books but ALSO I have far from read EVERYTHING out there so that I really distinctly know that nothing like it exists. So. Hm. Dilemmas. In the end, I do have a list and this was quite fun to write. I got quite flaily. You may notice that. So let’s get started. 1. A fantasy/sci-fi/dystopia from the perspective of the […]
