ARC Book Review: Otherbound by Corinne Duyvis

ARC Book Review: Otherbound by Corinne Duyvis

When I heard about Otherbound, it instantly went on my must-read list. I mean, it’s a diverse as all hell standalone fantasy book by a Dutch author. Uhhh, yeah, I was all kinds of down for this. Getting the review request made my day. And the book itself? Definitely enjoyable. I suppose where this book is strongest is in it’s intensely unique story. I honestly have never read anything like it. Duyvis must have some pretty awesome plot bunnies as pets. So Nolan is a teenage amputee of Spanish heritage living in contemporary Arizona. Every time he closes his eyes, he gets transported into the […]

Music Match-Up #6: Everneath by Brodi Ashton

Music Match-Up #6: Everneath by Brodi Ashton

Every once in a while, I come across a song that fits perfectly with a book I’ve read. In this new feature, I’ll tell you about them! Everneath series by Brodi Ashton The Books The Everneath series by Brodi Ashton is unquestionably one of my favorite series and one of the very few I’ve ever finished. Okay, so I didn’t like the ending in Evertrue very much, but Everneath and Everbound were solid reads that sucked me in and never let go, leaving me begging for more. I love the Greek mythology, but I also just got engrossed in the emotions and the characters. There’s […]

Book Review: The Geek’s Guide to Dating by Eric Smith

Book Review: The Geek’s Guide to Dating by Eric Smith

Now, I’m not really a non-fiction reader, but with its quirky title, The Geek’s Guide to Dating quickly became a must-read for me. And reading it was an absolutely wonderful experience. I giggled so much. This is just a great book for anyone on the geeky side of the spectrum looking to be entertained. You might just learn something too. First off, the structure and design of this book is absolutely fabulous. The layout is reminiscent of a textbook, but it has cute little 8-bit drawings as illustrations and anecdotal sections that really bring Smiths “theories” home. The book may be a bit guy-oriented, admittedly, […]

Top Ten Galleys I Hope To Pick Up at BEA 2014

Top Ten Galleys I Hope To Pick Up at BEA 2014

This is a meme from The Broke and the Bookish. For info about the topics and how to participate, click here. It’s almost here! I could have written this post about any aspect about BEA, but I think what’s on most of you readers’ minds is what books will be available there. I’ve been keeping an eye on signing schedules and galley drops, and these books are at the TOP of the list of books I hope to pick up. Of course, this is based off of what’s been announced that will be available there, so if I get to the convention center and pick up galley […]

Book Review: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

Book Review: A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

I think like everyone else, I was seriously daunted by the size of A Game Of Thrones, in spite of how much I wanted to read it. So yeah, for some I “did it in the wrong order” – I watched the TV series before I read the book. But you know what? I don’t care. I love the series and I love the book and reading it after being exposed to the elaborate world was definitely the right order for me. Like you would expect from most high fantasies, A Game of Thrones‘s strength is in the world building. This world is just incredibly […]

Book Review: Eon by Alison Goodman

Book Review: Eon by Alison Goodman

Eon is a Chinese mythology-inspired fantasy story involving dragons and genderbending, so obviously when I heard about it, it went on my GAH-MUST-HAVE-THIS-NOW list. Due to its length, I needed some extra persuasion to actually read it, but that’s when I can always count on book club. I breezed through and absolutely adored this story. Right off the bat I’ll just say that while this book is a daunting 530 pages, it doesn’t feel like it at all. It reads so easily that you just blaze through the pages and soon are at the ending begging for more. It has a lot to do, I […]

Expectations for NYC/BEA 2014

Expectations for NYC/BEA 2014

So, umm, BEA is happening. We are now ONE WEEK AWAY PEOPLE. ALERT. ALERT. I’m pretty sure all fellow attendees are in full fledged panic mode, packing, getting ready to fly (or drive), and getting way too freaking excited about all the epic bookishness about to go down. I have reached levels of being UNABLE TO CAN, but at the same time, I’m trying to hold everything together. I’ve been fully packed since Sunday, although I’m not leaving till Saturday. I have a schedule. Prioritized. And I have a buttload of expectations, some slightly exaggerated, some not, but whatever, this is my blog, I do […]
