Top Ten Favorite Heroines From Books

I thought for this list I would have a GINORMOUS list that would be super hard to trim down, but that actually isn’t the case! I focused mostly on sci-fi and fantasy series – because then there is actual world saving going on and such – and then the most sparkling personalities I could remember. (You’ll notice that I fall for the heroines with plenty of flaws.) Here’s what I came up with!

from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas

Celaena is just badass and awesome. She is flawed – she’s selfish and snarky, but she’s fierce. I absolutely adore her.

from The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon

I am so in love with Paige, it’s ridic. I could stay in her head for ages. She’s grown so much in the first two books, but especially at the end of The Mime Order I was just blown away by her strength and courage.

from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

Duh? She’s smart and kind and heroic. Let’s not forget that without her, Harry and Ron would have been lost and probably died a million times.

from The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins

Duh, again. But seriously, Katniss stole my heart like she did everyone’s. I mean, she’s brave and strong, but I also like her moodiness and her temper. She just speaks to me.

from the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series and The Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordan

And the trifecta is complete! Annabeth is smart and brave but she also wins major banter points because of Percabeth. How she keeps that boy in line… *happy sigh*

from The Falconer series by Elizabeth May

Aileana is a brilliant inventor, a super strong fighter, and just a badass.

from the A Wicked Thing series by Rhiannon Thomas

I just fell in love with Aurora. She’s not really a conventional heroine and she hasn’t saved much of the world yet. Book 1 was definitely just a character study of her but I loved how careful, cautious and analytical she is. She starts off meek and just confused about the world, but she’s already grown so much. I think in book 2 she will definitely be kicking some ass.

from the Penryn & the End of Days series by Susan Ee

Penryn, much like Katniss, stole my heart when she fought so hard to save her sister. That kind of bravery and butt-kicking awesomeness will never cease to amaze and excite me. Also this girl can banter.

from Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

Flawed, moody, snarky, I just fell completely in love with Nyx’s voice. Seriously, some people may get annoyed with her bitchiness and negativity, but I ADORE IT.

from The Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer

My love for this series knows no bounds – and though I might like Cress the most among the girls, Cinder impresses me more as a real heroine.

Do we share any favorite heroines?

  1. Ahhhhhhh there are a few on here I wish I had included, but narrowing down to five made it so hard for me. Katniss for sure should have been on mine – I read THG very early on in my blogging career and she was kind of my introduction to so many things, including the idea of a strong, cunning heroine. And Nyx! The amount of growth and development she shows over the course of Cruel Beauty. She is the perfect broody, dark heroine. Love her!

And your images are vair vair pretty.

    • You’re not the only one who skipped Katniss, so no worries. THG was the series that got me reading again and I just simply adored all of Katniss’s narrations. I can’t let go of her EVER (and asdfjkl; I need to reread the series).

      Thank youuuuu!

    • RIGHT I was so conflicted RE: Cress or Cinder. I definitely looooove Cress more, but Cinder is the heroic one. I mean, Cress helps in small ways and shows a different kind of strength, but that’s just… it’s hard to express. WHATEVER THAT WHOLE SERIES AND ALL ITS CHARACTERS ARE AWESOME.

  2. Except for Nyx and Aurora that I haven’t yet met, I have to agree with all the heroines of your list. Hermione is amazing and we see her grow so much through the series! Penryn is another amazing heroine that continues to try to help and do her best despite everything that’s thrown in her path!

  3. Ha, I think I know your taste quite well now, because I guessed 6 out of 10 characters that would be on your list (Celaena, Paige, Annabeth, Hermione, Katniss and Cinder.) I have to agree with all of them, with Celaena and Hermione as my top two girls. I love how flawed, broken and strong Celaena is. I also like how Sarah gave her two sides; she enjoys food and pretty clothes, but at the same time she isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty.

Hermione is just flawless and I would be her best friend. I always forget you’ve read Angelfall, perhaps because we’ve never fangirled about it before. Penryn is fierce. Aileana is also a wonderful pick – I would not have thought about her if I would have made this list and that’s ridiculous. This girl is bad ass indeed. Aurora surprised me! I freaking love Nyx.

    • Bahaha, ONLY 6 out of 10 though, Mel, srsly, that’s almost disappointing. (jk, I’m impressed ♥)

ANGELFALLLLLLLLL. We *have* never fangirled about it… I guess because it’s been so long since a new book? World After came out before we started book club I think. (Also I’m very flighty in my fangirling.) I need to reread that series, because I barely remember any of it.

AILEANA DESERVES MORE LOVE. I didn’t see her much on other peoples’ lists and it upsets me.

  4. Ooh I really like the name banners you created! Celaena is at the top of the list I think, she and Hermione feel like givens for so many different reasons!! Paige is pretty great too, I liked The Bone Season a lot. Katniss and Aileana!! Yessss. I’m so sad there isn’t a US date for The Vanishing Throne yet. I loved Nyx as well! I liked her hard edges. And Cinder <3 Cinder is the original, she's so awesome.

    • Awww thank you!! PAIGE IS AWESOME ALSO HAVE YOU READ THE MIME ORDER BECAUSE IT’S SO GOOOOD (better than The Bone Season imo).

I thought The Vanishing Throne was releasing everywhere in September – same time… no? I thought that was the reason it was pushed back for so long. o_O That series confuses me.

      • I haven’t yet, I need to!! My brain has been uncooperative so far this year when it comes to concentrating on awesome worldbuilding, so we’ll see when I get to it…

Hmm not sure. On Goodreads, it only has listings for the UK pub and the cover matches the UK Falconer, not US… plus can’t find it on any US retailers :/ I’ll probably get it from Book Depository but I want a pretty matching US copy!

  5. Now you’re making me want to reread the Lunar Chronicles and DEBBY MY REREAD LIST IS EPIC ALREADY. Ahhhhhh *adds it anyway*

Also never finished the Rick Riordan series. I read two, maybe 3? I liked Percy and Anna Beth but I can’t even remember if they got together by whatever point I stopped.

    • Haha, if you didn’t finish the series, you didn’t see Percabeth happen. WHICH MEANS YOU HAVE A GRAVE INJUSTICE TO FIX. FIX IT SOOOOOOOOOOON.
