Top Ten Books On My Spring 2015 TBR List

This is a meme from The Broke and the Bookish. For info about the topics and how to participate, click here. IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN. I am actually really excited to announce that I am 9 for 10 on my Winter TBR – and the 10th is only delayed because it became our book club pick for April! SO HA. I pretty much won that one. I really liked the structure I used in my last seasonal TBR – picking some books from my shelf, some review copies, and some new releases – so I think I’ll do that again! It really keeps me reading a variety […]

ARC Book Review: Solitaire by Alice Oseman

ARC Book Review: Solitaire by Alice Oseman

I knew that picking up Solitaire would be kind of a risk. It was the kind of blurb that attracted me because maybe I could relate to this main character and it would make me SOB. But it could also be pretentious, sappy, and/or completely boring. Sadly… it went for the boring route, and I just give zero fucks. Part of what attracted me to this book was the knowledge that the main character is a blogger. But that was a big ass mistake. Blogging is hardly even mentioned in this book. It’s just a detail about her character – and she’ll mention a couple […]

I Read for Characters

I Read for Characters

If you’ve followed me for a while, you probably know about how I really wasn’t a reader growing up – in fact, I didn’t read much at all before 2012. So now that I’ve been reading steadily, truly a tremendous number of books per year in a wide variety of genres, I’ve been discovering some things about myself as a reader, the first and foremost being… I read for characters. Honestly, you can give me the most elaborate world building and creative story, but if the characters are flat and don’t have a personality, I will quickly lose interest. I’m delighted by complex characters, I […]

Book Review: Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

Book Review: Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

I finally did it! I’ve had Ruin and Rising on my bookshelf for ages – since its publication day, actually – but I kept putting off reading it for some reason. I think I was scared that I would be let down. But no. Though there are some things that I would maybe have liked differently, Ruin and Rising is a solid ending to what I believe is a truly excellent YA fantasy series. Right away, what struck me upon reading Ruin and Rising was how gorgeous Leigh Bardugo’s writing is. I’ve been reading a lot of fantasy lately – in a row, even – […]

Top Ten Books for Readers Who Like Geeky/Nerdy Things

Top Ten Books for Readers Who Like Geeky/Nerdy Things

This is a meme from The Broke and the Bookish. For info about the topics and how to participate, click here. I had a really freaking hard time thinking of a topic for this week. I had like ten million ideas (i.e. genderbending, traveling, fairy tales, Greek mythology), but though I love ALL of those things, I simply haven’t read enough books to make a top ten for any of them o_o I did have enough for hate-to-love romance ships, but I kind of covered those in my TTT on romantic tropes I love. I feel like a complete failure as a reader. BUT. Okay, so if […]

ARC Book Review: Liars, Inc. by Paula Stokes

ARC Book Review: Liars, Inc. by Paula Stokes

Mysteries and thrillers usually aren’t my thing. I won’t lie to you about that. No, the reason why I picked up Liars, Inc. is simply because of the author. Paula Stokes is amazing and wonderful and so so friendly, and I just adored The Art of Lainey, so in spite of this book being a little out of my comfort zone, I had to have it. Well, I regret nothing – because I really enjoyed this book! Liars, Inc. is a murder mystery. I don’t feel like I’m spoiling it – because it’s in the blurb – but Max’s best friend, Preston, disappears and later […]

Book Haul #20: In Which I LOVE Macmillan

Book Haul #20: In Which I LOVE Macmillan

February’s book haul is late, but it is MASSIVE. I just can’t even with this. Though, looking back, my purchases weren’t too bad – especially since a bunch of those I’d read already. But the review copies… Ah, who am I kidding. Publishers are awesome and I can’t wait to read these books! ♥♥♥ Purchased The Near Witch by Victoria Schwab Dark Triumph by Robin LaFevers Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers Stitching Snow by R.C. Lewis (my review) The Perilous Sea by Sherry Thomas (my review) A Wicked Thing by Rhiannon Thomas (my review) When Joss Met Matt by Ellie Cahill (my review) A Darker […]

Book Review: Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

Book Review: Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

Grave Mercy and indeed the His Fair Assassin trilogy is one of those super hyped up YA series that I sort of never really considered until an explosion of hype seemed to appear last year. That one’s on me. Whyyyy did I not pick this up earlier?? I absolutely adored this historical fiction with light touches of fantasy and amazing, amazing characters. Grave Mercy, you’ve probably heard, is about assassin nuns. Our main character, Ismae, ends up at a convent for St. Mortain, the god of death. Mortain is supposedly her father, so she trains in all manner of weapons and poisons to do his […]
