ARC Book Review: Becoming Jinn by Lori Goldstein

ARC Book Review: Becoming Jinn by Lori Goldstein

I’ve been super excited about this mini-genie trend that’s popped up in YA the last couple of years, having loved The Art of Wishing and liked Exquisite Captive, but I suppose it was only fitting that at some point I’d come across one that I really didn’t care for. Becoming Jinn is – unfortunately – a boring flat mess. I think the biggest issue Becoming Jinn has is that the plot is so weak, it’s near non-existent. Azra turns sixteen and inherits her jinn powers, and then it just kind of plods along. She has to grant her first wishes and finds out some more […]

Top Ten Inspiring Quotes from Books

Top Ten Inspiring Quotes from Books

This is a meme from The Broke and the Bookish. For info about the topics and how to participate, click here. I’m not a biiiig quote person, but I remembered correctly that in my favorite inspiring contemporary reads, there are some amazing passages that I really took to heart. “You think it’s so easy to change yourself. You think it’s so easy, but it’s not. True, things don’t stay the same forever: couches are replaced, boys leave, you discover a song, your body becomes forever scarred. And with each of these moments you change and change again, your true self spinning, shifting positions– but always at last […]

Book Review: William Shakespeare’s The Phantom of Menace by Ian Doescher

Book Review: William Shakespeare’s The Phantom of Menace by Ian Doescher

I embarked on this quirky little series when I thought it would only be the original Star Wars series, so I was a bit surprised to hear about William Shakespeare’s The Phantom of Menace. You would think that after three books, the novelty of the Shakespearification of Star Wars might wear off – but no! I enjoyed The Phantom of Menace immensely. I’ll be upfront with you and say that of all the Star Wars movies, The Phantom Menace is my least favorite. This is the case for many fans, I believe, because the story’s weaker and – well – Jar Jar Binks happened. But […]

Book Review: Teaching Roman by Gennifer Albin

Book Review: Teaching Roman by Gennifer Albin

I guess this is karma, right? I read Catching Liam and I was totally in love – filled with hope for more NA books I could completely fall in love with – and then the SAME AUTHOR just has to ruin everythinggggggggg. Teaching Roman is just blah. So bad, it’s almost hilarious but for the fact that I want to cry. I can’t even believe the sheer stupidity that happened in this book. But I’ll try to keep calm and explain. My basic problem with Teaching Roman is that it is nothing but sex. And I like my sexy scenes every once in a while […]

Book Review: Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers

Book Review: Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers

Wow. Just wow. I loved Grave Mercy and Dark Triumph, so my expectations for Mortal Heart were understandably high. But it met them. Exceptionally well. This is one of the best series conclusions I have ever read, and the series as a whole has forever gained a place on my favorites shelf. Mortal Heart tells Annith’s story. Annith is quite different from Ismae and Sybella. She’s more innocent and sheltered, mostly because of the convent’s refusal to send her out on a mission. She’s a super hard worker though and has gained skills beyond any of the other novitiates. As such, she’s desperate to prove […]
