Unpopular Opinions Tag

I saw Christina (A Reader of Fictions) and Gillian (Writer of Wrongs) doing this last week, so obviously I considered myself tagged for reasons (mostly being that this looked like fun). This tag originated on Booktube, apparently, so I did not make it but I will gladly answer these questions!

A popular book or series that you didn’t like

The 5th Wave An Ember in the Ashes Across the Universe

Three tremendously popular series starters (probably *glares at AEitA*) that I didn’t care for one bit. The 5th Wave actually made an alien invasion boring and featured cardboard characters and creeeepy instalove. An Ember in the Ashes wasn’t actively terrible, but it was just meh all around. Across the Universe was also sooo boring – the characters were flat and the romance was terrible. I actually started the sequel still trying to understand the hype, but quit halfway through. TL;DR: WHY HYPE, WHY??

A book or series that everyone seems
to hate but you love

Exquisite Captive
Exquisite Captive by Heather Demetrios

I couldn’t think of anything that really fit those two extremes – hated by everyone else, loved by me. But I did like Exquisite Captive a whole lot more than most. That book is massive, but the world building was really cool and I just got swept up in Demetrios’s writing – particularly in her romance. However, I do have a few issues with it, and the book was far from perfect, so I’m not entirely convinced to check out the sequel.

A love triangle that didn’t end
the way you wanted it to

The Hunger Games Catching Fire Mockingjay
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I KNOW. I know. Just in case you are a speshul case who hasn’t read these: View Spoiler »

A book genre you hardly reach for

Liars Inc Lily Graves Every Breath
Mystery

Till now, I’ve pretty much only picked up mysteries if I’d read the author’s previous works in different genres. And it’s not been so successful yet – I liked Liars, Inc. well enough but it didn’t quite blow me away, and The Secrets of Lily Graves was just meh. But I will be reading the Every series soon, and I expect that’ll be a hit for sure!

A popular or beloved character that you do not like

Vampire Academy Frostbite Shadow Kiss
Rose AND Dimitri from Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Just thinking about this series puts me on edge – earlier this week I got trolled on my review of the first book, about how I should DEFINITELY keep reading, because the series is AMAZING, and “I dare you to not completely fall in love with it”. Challenge accepted and fulfilled last year, bitch. Everyone loves Rose for being fierce, but to me she is just arrogant, cocky, selfish, and annoying. She almost gained my respect in Frostbite but by Last Sacrifice, I absolutely hated her guts. And Dimitri, who everyone fawns all over for being so dreamy and awesome? He bored me to tears and creeped me out. (This series could have answered almost any of the other questions on this tag, quite frankly.)

A popular author you just can’t seem to enjoy

Just One Year If I Stay Where She Went
Gayle Forman

Everyone probably saw this coming. Admittedly I loved Just One Day a lot, but after that, everything from Forman has failed for me. When time and again I couldn’t connect to the characters and their emotional drama, I just got more and more peeved about the pretentious writing. This paired with the intense hype for all her books has made me pretty apathetic.

A popular trope you’re tired of seeing

the jewel

I’m of the opinion that any trope can be done well, but there are plenty of tropes that are just over-used, typically in terrible ways. My biggest annoyances at the moment are the “the chosen one” and/or Deus Ex Machina tropes. This is kind of a fantasy staple, and again, enough books do it well. But there are just as many that do it poorly. I don’t like a character being all powerful because reasons. I don’t like random special powers appearing right when necessary. I hate it when everything just comes easy to “the chosen one” and when the world revolves around them for seemingly no good reason. It reeks of poor planning and world building. (See: The Jewel, Becoming Jinn.)

A popular series you have no interest in reading

Fallen Hush Hush Halo Fifty Shades of Grey Beautiful Creatures The Iron King Clockwork Angel The Goddess Test

I have no interest in abusive/controlling love interests (Fallen, Hush Hush, Halo, Fifty Shades of Grey), sappy dramatic romance and horrible everything (Beautiful Creatures), long drawn out, terrible love triangles (The Iron King), anything from the exploitative Shadowhunters world (Clockwork Angel), and I heard about the end of The Goddess Test series and lol I do not want.

A movie or TV show that was better than the book

Howl's Moving Castle
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

Admittedly I saw the movie before I ever read the book, and I always think that makes you more attached to the adaptation than if you read the book first. But I watched it again after having read the book and… the movie just has so much more whimsy. It fills in the blanks in Jones’s creative world and makes the characters so much more dynamic and awesome. AND THE SHIP. The ship was infinitely better. Also – it’s Studio Ghibli. So like. Duh.

I Tag… YOU. If you want!

  1. I didn’t even know that Howl’s was a book and I have no intention of reading it.

This looks like a fun tag, I don’t know much about Rose/Dimitri since I DNF’d that series like 50 pages in.

  2. I totally agree the Howl’s Moving Castle! The movie was quite a bit better than the book, but like you, I watched the film first and that does lend a certain attachment to the way things play out in that version.

  3. Debby, I almost seriously listed Howl’s Moving Castle for my last choice! I actually wrote it up, and then changed my mind because something stuck out a little more.

Like you said, the book was pretty good, but the movie, to me, was a bit tighter and more magical!
