Audiobook Review: The Bitter Kingdom by Rae Carson

Audiobook Review: The Bitter Kingdom by Rae Carson

I did it guys. I finished this series and sadly… I remain the black sheep who was passively entertained but a long way from enthralled. The Bitter Kingdom did some things that I liked, but in other ways remained boring to me. The series’ peak was The Crown of Embers for me, and I will just stay here in my corner, forever puzzled about all the hype. There are things that The Bitter Kingdom did well, admittedly. Elisa has grown throughout the series, and in The Bitter Kingdom she fully embraces her role as Queen. She gets involved in politics, negotiating with other parties and […]

Audiobook Review: The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson

Audiobook Review: The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson

I put off reading The Crown of Embers for ages because, well, after The Girl of Fire and Thorns, I just wasn’t that enthusiastic or convinced that the series was really something for me. However, I’d heard the audiobooks were pretty good, and with the added benefit of being able to multitask, I figured I should give it a shot. Ultimately, I will say the sequel is far better than the original – but it’s still not my favorite fantasy series ever. I will say that I enjoyed this a great deal as an audiobook, because Jennifer Ikeda is a fantastic narrator. She does great […]

Audiobook Review: Feed by Mira Grant

Audiobook Review: Feed by Mira Grant

I’ll be the first to admit that zombies are just not my thing. But Feed came into my life when Christina gifted me the box set with the promise that the blogging/politics/Newsroom-like aspects would probably win me over. And, well, they DID. Feed is an incredibly intriguing and realistic political thriller involving a zombie outbreak. Though it’s lengthy, there’s so much to love. I didn’t even have any nightmares! Winning on all fronts! First off, I should note that this review is of the audiobook, which I purchased after running out of time to finish the book in print. But the audiobook is fantastic. The […]

Audiobook Review: Chasing Before by Lenore Appelhans

Audiobook Review: Chasing Before by Lenore Appelhans

I start this review with pain in my heart because I wanted to like Chasing Before so badly. I really enjoyed The Memory of After in spite of a few quibbles, and I’ve met Lenore on multiple occasions. She’s awesome! So awesome that she’s the one who gave me this audiobook! And sadly, I didn’t really like it. I didn’t hate it either, but it was just a bit meh. First off, I shouldn’t have listened to this on audio. I should have read it in print. Right away, I realized that Cynthia Holloway is not the narrator for me. Her voice is high pitched, […]

Audiobook Review: Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead

Audiobook Review: Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead

In spite of this somewhat happy achievement of finishing a series, Last Sacrifice was one of the most painful things for me to read. Nay, listen to. Listen to. And check out the book info – yeah SEVENTEEN HOURS LONG. Painfully long, horrendously boring, and leading to the most clichéd and sickening ending. I should have stopped after book 3. I honestly do not know why I did this to myself. It’s one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made. I don’t even really want to talk about this anymore because for the majority of listening to this audiobook, I was yelling, “FUCK YOU ROSE!” […]

Audiobook Review: Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead

Audiobook Review: Spirit Bound by Richelle Mead

Urgh. Series. Why do you anger me so yet still keep me going. (Adrian.) On the bright side, Spirit Bound was an improvement over Blood Promise, but then again that wasn’t too hard. The RAGE this book filled me with though. Sadly, you do not read Vampire Academy for plot. You read it for swoons. And well. I’m no longer swooning. To be fair, compared to many of the books in the series, Spirit Bound is probably the most action-packed book so far. A lot does happen in this installment. Rose finally graduates from St. Vladimir’s, and she goes around kicking ass. She goes after […]

Audiobook Review: Blood Promise by Richelle Mead

Audiobook Review: Blood Promise by Richelle Mead

* Contains spoilers for Shadow Kiss, proceed with caution! * Aww, man. Just when I thought this series was kind of getting on the right track to work with me… it does this. *sigh* Unlike Frostbite and Shadow Kiss, Blood Promise has left me feeling meh and confused and I don’t know what even. Okay, basically my problem is that it feels like nothing freaking happened in this book – in spite of the audio being over 13 hours long and the print over 500 pages. At the beginning, I thought this was going to be pretty good. Rose is on a mission, ending up […]

Audiobook Review: Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead

Audiobook Review: Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead

After a much more enjoyable experience with Frostbite, listening to it on audiobook, I continued on with the series in this format as soon as I could. Now, Shadow Kiss gets a fair amount of hype for being the strongest in the series, which is particularly tied to a heartbreaking, shocking plot twist at the end of the book. Unfortunately for me, that twist was spoiled by an uncivilized human being thing on Goodreads who decided to ALL CAPS their outrage over that twist in their review, without spoiler tags – just two sentences to tell everyone WHAT happened and that they couldn’t believe it. […]
