Book Review: My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Book Review: My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

My Life Next Door came to my doorstep with a fair amount of hype. *eyes Judith, Cassie* So when the time came and I was eagerly looking for a contemporary romance to lift my spirits, I knew where to turn to. While the beginning was exactly what I was looking for, it quickly petered off, and at the end of the day, due to the high expectations, I was kind of let down. As a contemporary romance, My Life Next Door delivers on the adorability factor. Sam and Jase are definitely cute together. Jase is just about everything you want in a young adult love interest: he’s […]

Book Review: Poison by Bridget Zinn

Book Review: Poison by Bridget Zinn

Poison by Bridget Zinn is a truly enjoyable little fantasy story. It has some great characters (and one AMAZING one) and was easily digestible all around. When push came to shove though, this book never really did anything to stand out and wow me. That’s not to say that it’s bad… but I did wish for more. It had way more potential. But I don’t regret reading it, because what was written was definitely good. So, Poison basically tells the story of one extraordinary pig who gets swept up in an adventure when this girl, Kyra something-or-other, recruits her for a dangerous mission. Along the way she […]

Book Review: What’s Left of Me by Kat Zhang

Book Review: What’s Left of Me by Kat Zhang

What’s Left of Me is certainly one of the better and more unique dystopias out there. The creative premise is instantly captivating and definitely memorable. It’s a great read, and I certainly enjoyed it. But somewhere it does just lack that spark that makes me over-the-top fall in love with it. I must say I love the concept and its execution. Addie and Eva are two souls in one body. The story takes place from Eva’s point of view, the recessive soul. However, hybrids are illegal, and the fact that Eva hasn’t disappeared is not allowed. They try to keep this a secret, because letting go […]

ARC Book Review: The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau

ARC Book Review: The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau

The first words that come to mind having finished this book are: hot damn, what a page turner. To be honest, while I am a big dystopia fan, I was sort of losing my faith in the genre. It’s being inundated with bland stories with bad world building and cheap romance. A lot of the ones I was picking up just lacked that spark. But this book… The Testing is one to look out for guys. What I think is strongest about this novel is that it really has that chilling dystopian feeling. What I mean by that is that the story is quite dark […]

Book Review: Incarnate by Jodi Meadows

Book Review: Incarnate by Jodi Meadows

Jodi Meadows brings to us, with Incarnate, a vastly creative and original young adult novel. This is one of those times where I’m almost speechless because of the subtle beauty of this story. The most challenging thing of this review is to explain why exactly I did like it very much. Perhaps it’s best explained through actions, not words, with the fact that I read it within a day, which is not very common for me. Normally, typically, I’m the kind of reader that falls for a big adventure story with equal parts action and suspense. A beautiful romance on the side is a big […]

Book Review: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Book Review: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Maybe I should give this a half orange extra? I dunno. I liked this book. Considering how much hype it’s gotten I thought it was definitely worth checking out. And I went in with pretty much the lowest expectations ever because the paranormal genre is usually not my thing. I suppose that probably helped. The biggest flaw that I can think of that no moment really “blew me away” or whatever. I’d seen spoilers – so the ending revelation about Jace was nothing new to me. I am interested to see how that will be resolved – since I already sort of know that too. […]

Book Review: Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Book Review: Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

This was an interesting one. It came quite highly recommended, I believe one of the most highly anticipated YA Dystopias of the year. But I’m a bit torn, hence my rating. There were things I liked, things I didn’t like, things I thought could have benefited from more elaboration, but ultimately I think it’s a good set up for a series. My liking for it though will depend on the next installment of the series. I’m sort of on the fence. There were a lot of elements in this book that were amazingly good. I loved the concept of the Pods, the Realms, etc. These […]

Book Review: The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

Book Review: The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

I have to say, coming off the high of The Last Olympian, this book is plain and simple: a letdown. There may be slight spoilers, so beware. Let’s start, however, with the positives. I was immediately ecstatic when I started reading because Riordan had decided to switch to third person narrative. I’ve always been a bigger fan of this style of writing, and here it did the story justice as well. The immediate result is a tone that just seems a lot more mature, and that suits the story because the characters are now in the later teen years. Riordan stuck to his winning formula, […]
