Graphic Novel Review: The Lightning Thief

Graphic Novel Review: The Lightning Thief

When I saw this listed on the Book Depository, I just knew I had to buy it. It had to happen. I love the Percy Jackson series so much, so I honestly didn’t care that it would be the exact same story. The illustrations would make it a whole new and wonderful experience. In a way, I was correct, but still this could have been better. In terms of the adaptation, this graphic novel is extremely close to the original, so no worries there. If anything, it begs the question why the movie couldn’t be a closer adaptation, but I think we’ve all established what a […]

Book Review: Poison by Bridget Zinn

Book Review: Poison by Bridget Zinn

Poison by Bridget Zinn is a truly enjoyable little fantasy story. It has some great characters (and one AMAZING one) and was easily digestible all around. When push came to shove though, this book never really did anything to stand out and wow me. That’s not to say that it’s bad… but I did wish for more. It had way more potential. But I don’t regret reading it, because what was written was definitely good. So, Poison basically tells the story of one extraordinary pig who gets swept up in an adventure when this girl, Kyra something-or-other, recruits her for a dangerous mission. Along the way she […]

Book Review: The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan

Book Review: The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan

First off, I AM IN A GLASS CASE OF EMOTION. (Because the ending. Yeah.) *cough* So after devouring the original Percy Jackson & the Olympians series in May and the first two books of The Heroes of Olympus in June, the time finally came that I had to wait for the next installment. Ew, waiting. However, I was not totally convinced by The Heroes of Olympus – I didn’t like it as much as PJO. I didn’t feel like it was quite at the same level. So waiting was not too awful. But The Mark of Athena changes things. Obviously, looking at the title, Annabeth […]

Book Review: The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan

Book Review: The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan

Wow. After The Lost Hero, which was extremely disappointing to me, The Son of Neptune is a definite improvement. I started really skeptically, and the first half was extremely slow and contrived, but the second half more than made up for it. The Positives I think should first give honorable mention to Ella. I think of all the new characters introduced in The Heroes of Olympus, she is by far the best one. She’s extremely adorable, I love all the facts she spouts out – her dialogue is epic. The only less awesome thing to say about her is that I have no idea how […]

Book Review: The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

Book Review: The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

I have to say, coming off the high of The Last Olympian, this book is plain and simple: a letdown. There may be slight spoilers, so beware. Let’s start, however, with the positives. I was immediately ecstatic when I started reading because Riordan had decided to switch to third person narrative. I’ve always been a bigger fan of this style of writing, and here it did the story justice as well. The immediate result is a tone that just seems a lot more mature, and that suits the story because the characters are now in the later teen years. Riordan stuck to his winning formula, […]

Book Review: The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan

Book Review: The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan

Okay, this book was PERFECT. JUST PERFECT. That is the single best word to describe it. In each book one of my absolute favorite elements has been the introduction of the gods. In this book I must say it was Hestia. Goddess of the hearth – you always forget about her, but to me it strikes a chord, as home has always been the most important thing to me. So her character to me was a beautiful addition that really made you think. I was surprised because usually in all mythology Persephone is my favorite, but Riordan’s adaptation of her wasn’t that amazing to me. […]

Book Review: The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan

Book Review: The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan

Wow, the books in this series just get better and better don’t they? I enjoyed this one even more than The Titan’s Curse, which I honestly wasn’t expecting. There was so much story development, but I mean, there has to be when the two sides finally start fighting. I think the actual battle of the labyrinth was my favorite scene in the book. So much action. Riordan wrote that very well. It was immensely exciting. So many love triangles in this book. I must admit, I love the addition of Rachel Elizabeth Dare to the book, if only to watch Annabeth get more and more […]

Book Review: The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan

Book Review: The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan

I think I’m really hooked on this series now, considering the fact that I read this book within a day. Well admittedly I’d want to read them all like this, but there’s exams in two weeks. This is so not good for me. This book was another great installment. Riordan has really picked up a winning formula here. Every time another mythological creature comes along, I get all excited. It’s amazing how he can mix that with the actual world. And it just works! I have to say, I think Blackjack was my favorite character for this book. Haha, he wasn’t around too much but […]
