Book Review: This Is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith

Book Review: This Is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith

As a true hopeless romantic, the “normal girl meets and falls in love with a famous boy” story makes my heart flutter. No matter how clich√©, I really enjoy reading stories like it. And yet… This Is What Happy Looks Like is just lackluster in everything. This review will contain spoilers. Beware. I just can’t review this book without pointing out the idiotic plot points. So Ellie and Graham meet by accident when Graham misspells an e-mail address. They don’t know who the other is, but they seem to really easily strike up conversations about almost nothing. So Graham, a famous movie star, when in […]

Book Review: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith

Book Review: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight is a charming, quick, light read for when you’re in that contemporary kind of mood. You can very easily read it in one sitting to cleanse the palate. Obviously, looking at the title, this book is really romance-centric. Oliver is so absolutely charming. The dialogue between him and Hadley is really pleasant and adorable. There were some super touching moments, and my heart melted just a bit at the end. And I mean, I read the whole thing picturing Oliver as this guy, adorable accent included. How can you go wrong? Julian Morris Overall there’s not much […]

Book Review: The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

Book Review: The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling

Now I’ll be the first to admit that by simply reading the premise, I don’t think this is a book I would normally pick up. It’s not that it’s completely out of my comfort zone or something, but it’s definitely J.K. Rowling’s name on the cover that got me so excited. Harry Potter changed my life, like much of my generation, but if I had to name one thing about that series that blew me away it would be the writing. I absolutely love Rowling’s style, the way she creates a world and develops her characters. To me, it’s a flawless writing style that since […]

Book Review: Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Book Review: Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

“Are you really reading about angels, Debby?” Yes. I read a book about angels. I too thought it would totally not be my cup of tea. But Laini Taylor is a master storyteller, has the most beautiful prose, and creates a story I would think impossible not to love. The prose was possibly the strongest point of this whole novel. The imagery, the descriptions, everything was so amazingly beautiful. Strong prose, I find, is a rarity in the YA genre, I don’t think I’ve encountered it this good before. It’s just an element that immediately sucks you right into the story. And it makes me […]
