Music Match-Up #2: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Posted January 24, 2014 by Debby in Uncategorized

Every once in a while, I come across a song that fits perfectly with a book I’ve read. In this new feature, I’ll tell you about them!

Divergent by Veronica Roth

It’s fair to say that my love for the Divergent series has greatly waned. I absolutely loved the first book when I read it about two years ago, but then I read Insurgent right after its release in 2012 and… ugh. Just ugh. That book. I haven’t even bothered to pick up Allegiant yet, but I will at some point out of morbid curiosity so NO SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS PLEASE.

I had to get that out of the way. *cough* I know I probably would like Divergent as much if I re-read it today, but I do remember that it was action packed and thrilling. In particular, the song I’m picking for this post, fits it perfectly. And with the movie finally approaching, I thought I might as well share it. Fire Starter by Demi Lovato not only has the perfect lyrics about jumping off a train (*snickers*) is also a great representation of Tris’s attitude, as I could remember it. I will forever associate this song with the book.

The idea of leaping out of a moving train onto a rooftop, knowing there is a gap between the edge of the roof and the edge of the track, makes me want to throw up.

On three we launch off the train car. A weightless moment, and then my feet slam into solid ground and pain prickles through my shins. The jarring landing sends me sprawling on the rooftop, gravel under my cheek. I release Christina’s hand. She’s laughing. Divergent by Veronica Roth
He told me once to be brave, and though I have stood still while knives spun toward my face and jumped off a roof, I never thought I would need bravery in the small moments of my life. I do. Divergent by Veronica Roth
My heart beats so hard it hurts, and I can’t scream and I can’t breathe, but I also feel everything, every vein and every fiber, every bone and every nerve, all awake and buzzing in my body as if charged with electricity. I am pure adrenaline. Divergent by Veronica Roth

I’m a bad ass jumping off the moving train
I’m a Jane Bond, putting all the guys to shame
I’m a wild card, I’m about to take my aim
You better watch out, watch out

I’m a fire starter, I’m a sweet disaster
I melt hearts like water
Yeah yeah oh yeah yeah oh yeah yeah
I’m a fire starter, I’m a sweet disaster
I melt hearts like water
Yeah yeah oh yeah yeah oh yeah yeah

I’m so high, I’m burning up,
Kiss your lips, I’m waking up
There’s nothing more to be afraid of

There’s an “S” under my clothes
On my chest where nobody else can see

Let’s Talk!

What do you think about this music match? Match made in heaven, amirite? *cough* What songs (if any) do you associate with Divergent?

Let me know in the comments!

  1. This is such a fun and create idea! Matching music to books! Would you mind if I did this some time? I’ll give credit to you!

But I completely agree with you on the song xD The lyrics are quite accurate, haha. Especially the train part!

  2. I am in the same boat than you are with the Divergent series. I loved Divergent, Insurgent left me feeling so-so, and I still haven’t picked up Allegiant… a bit scared after all the reactions I’ve seen!

  3. I’m no fan of Divergent but I love the idea behind this post!! I’ll admit that I’m more likely to attach a song to a scene from my own writing…or a song might bring a completely new song to mind…but there are definitely a few songs that bring certain adored characters to mind.

And the moving train lyrics really are perfect, ha!

  4. I actually thought of Divergent when I was listening to Fire Starter the other day, so we have the same feeling about this pairing! That same lyric about the train stood out to me as well.
