Music Match-Up #4: Adorkable by Sarra Manning

Every once in a while, I come across a song that fits perfectly with a book I’ve read. In this new feature, I’ll tell you about them!

Adorkable by Sarra Manning

I know, I know, what a cliche, right? Adorkable hasn’t been mentioned on my blog in like a week, so I have to bring it up again. But you know what, I don’t really care, bahahaha. Slowly but surely I’ll convince everyone that they need to read this book.

So I’ve already raved in my review and twenty gazillion Top Ten Tuesday lists of all the different ways that I love this book, but here’s something new. I found a song that I love that goes perfectly with it. You see, one of my favorite parts of this book is that it has a main character who is so fierce and proud to be herself. She doesn’t care what anyone else thinks about her. She’s proud of her voice and her image, and she owns it.

This was one of the main reasons why this book is so dear to my heart: because I’ve never fit the standard “norm” either. I’ve never really fit in, I’ve always been a little off, a little kooky, and for a long time, I really struggled with that. Jeane goes through issues with her identity as well, but ultimately, the book has a great message about just being yourself, and people ultimately respecting you for that – even if they don’t always show it.

The Song

Now the song that I think fits perfectly with this book is ‘I Wanna Be Like Me’ by Sarra Bareilles. Yes, the last Music Match-Up was also a Sara Bareilles song, but I don’t care, okay? She’s my favorite artist of all time, and her songs just sing to my soul.

This song fits perfectly. Not only are the lyrics straight from Jeane’s perspective, the song is also very personal to me that way. It just is, sadly, a very accurate depiction of my relationship with my mother and my sister. So yeah, you can say that I see where Jeane’s coming from in Adorkable. But I also just love the music arrangement, because it’s very quirky and unique, exactly in Jeanne’s kind of different, eclectic taste.

What if I wanna be the one who
Never looks like anybody?
What if I wanna be the one who
Goes her own way?

Would you still believe in someone like me?

What if I wanna be the one who
Doesn’t belong here?
What if I wanna be the one who
Won’t fit in?

Would you find a new way to make room for me?
