Music Match-Up #6: Everneath by Brodi Ashton

Every once in a while, I come across a song that fits perfectly with a book I’ve read. In this new feature, I’ll tell you about them!

The Books

The Everneath series by Brodi Ashton is unquestionably one of my favorite series and one of the very few I’ve ever finished. Okay, so I didn’t like the ending in Evertrue very much, but Everneath and Everbound were solid reads that sucked me in and never let go, leaving me begging for more. I love the Greek mythology, but I also just got engrossed in the emotions and the characters. There’s a love triangle here that’s one of the absolute best I’ve encountered in YA View Spoiler ».

Right from the beginning, I was absorbed by the relationship dynamic between Nikki and Cole. It’s so complicated and messy but there’s something there. Which brings me to…

The Song

As much as this song is overplayed nowadays, when I first heard it, I immediately fell in love and immediately associated it with Everneath. Particularly the music video of “I Knew You Were Trouble” by Taylor Swift, with its spoken word opening, made the story hit home for me. And it’s not just the story, it’s the cinematography and ambiance. I could totally see this being sung about Nikki and Cole. He’s bad news, and she knows it, but she went with him to the Everneath anyway, and there is an undeniable chemistry between them. But he pretty much destroys her and leaves her life completely wrecked. I’ll always associate this song with Everneath, View Spoiler ».

I knew his world moved too fast and burned too bright.
But I just thought, how can the devil be pulling you toward someone who looks so much like an angel when he smiles at you?
Maybe he knew that when he saw me.
I guess I just lost my balance.
I think that the worst part of it all wasn’t losing him.
It was losing me.

Do you have a song that makes you think of Everneath?

  1. Very apt song Debby!
I have a problem with this song, and it’s not a problem with the song itself, but I cannot listen to it without thinking of another version with a goat bleeting in certain parts that’s absolutely hilarious!!!

  2. I actually just finished Everneath last month so there wasn’t much Cole/Nikki exploration (I’m guessing there will be more?) but the entire time, I always found myself more drawn to Cole than Jack. I don’t know, to me Cole just seems like a more complex, solid character whereas Jack doesn’t really have an identity to me other than the guy who’s in love with Nikki. But anyway, I definitely think your choice for song was right on! The music video matches the book a lot as well! I don’t imagine Nikki with pink highlights but the guy in the video could definitely be Cole if he were blonde!
