Ship-Defining Quotes – a.k.a. ASDFJKL; MY FEELS

Posted December 12, 2014 by Debby in Uncategorized

Shipping. Such a wonderful thing. Such a huge hobby of mine. Of course, there are a lot of different types of ships, which I’m planning on writing another discussion post about sometime soon, but today I wanted to focus on one shipping-aspect: when the whole of the ship can be defined by one quote. And any time you hear that quote, you melt. You are one big puddle of feels and you just can’t help it, but whatever, it’s worth it.

This phenomenon happens when a spectacularly beautiful ship is complimented by beautiful writing and feeltastic plot moments. So it doesn’t happen ALL the time, but when it does, my fingers curl up as my body is charged with feels from head to toe, and I just want to carve those quotes on my body, and asdfjkl; Okay. I’ll stop. This is getting just a bit creepy. ANYWAY, here are a few of my most beautiful ships, summed up in the most beautiful quotes.

“Leave the window open.”The Unbound by Victoria Schwab
Okay, I just read The Unbound and I just cannot even with this sentence anymore. Wesley and Mac are basically perfect, yes, but then this asdfjkl; thing and asdfjkl; okay, it’s the title of the novella coming out in January for a REASON. But it perfectly encapsulates how Wesley is just the best ever and he’ll do anything to help Mac and asdjfkl; asdfjkl; asfdjkl; The Archived fans know.

“She crept up on me.”Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
Finnick already stole my heart as a snarky, flirty, awesome character, but the way he genuinely and very privately cares about Annie? OH MY GOD THE FEELS. Do not utter these words around me, I will cry.

Gale is mine. I am his. Anything else is unthinkable.Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

“You are my whole heart, Scarlet. And this is breaking it.”Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen
This was the moment when I realized just how much I ship it like BURNING. I pretty much made keening noises and asdfjkl; I CAN’T BE ALONE ON THIS.

The rest of the world quieted into nothing. In that moment, after ten long years, Celaena looked at Chaol and realised she was home.Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

These were all small things, but kindness was built of small things.A Mad, Wicked Folly by Sharon Biggs Waller
This passage, where Vicky wonders about all the effort and detail Will went into to pick out the perfect birthday present for her? IT. KILLED. ME.

Let’s Talk!

Am I the only one who gets this way? Or do you also have some ships with certain quotes that just SLAY you? WHICH ONES? (Spoiler-free please!) Seriously though, be careful mentioning these quotes around me because I might just burst into tears. Seriously if I hear ‘leave the window open’ I don’t even know what’s going to happen anymore. Tears? Hugs? Curling into the fetal position? Whimpering? All are fair game.

  1. I’m all about the ships, but I can’t say that there are specific quotes that stand out to me. But I’m also not really a quote person. I love the feels, of course, but I tend to feel them but the entirety of the story, or the scene perhaps, and not specific lines. I can’t think of any right now. But I really liked your post!

  2. I get the same way! I haven’t thought about specific quotes actually (I should start doing that), but when somebody mentions a particular scene in a book (or just a quote from that seen) I get ALL THE FEELS. I either start fangirling, or feel like bursting into tears.

Like the Rob and Scarlet quote, and the Celaena and Chaol quote you included into the post. EXPLOSION OF FEELINGS! *sighs* I have so much love for these and I ship them big time.

Some people are really worth melting for, especially those ships!
    Great post Debby!

And yes, Annie/Finnick all the way. I got tired of Katniss’ indecision so I jumped ship and invested all my energy into Finnick/Annie.

  4. Oh Olaf, that’s such an adorable scene.

I’m happy I can finally go and join The Archived fandom! I got the first book this week and I’m in the mood for some ship-feelings and swoonworthy romance combined with a good plot & beautiful writing-style. Finnick/Annie *sob* They are perfection. I really like him and it’s so sweet. Celaena/Chaol are my OTP forever. *Gets hit by all the feelings* No matter how many hot and awesome guys Sarah throws into the story, I ship these two so hard. And Rob/Scarlet are adorable too.

  5. Welp. Now I need to go crack open The Unbound. I adored Wes in The Archived and I’m really not sure why I’ve avoided book 2 for so long!

I’m awarding you the Mean Blogger Ribbon for even MENTIONING Finnick and Annie. HOW DARE YOU???

Celaena and Chaol better be endgame. No matter how hot Rowan is. Plus that leaves Rowan for all the rabid readers <3

    • YES DEFINITELY READ THE UNBOUND SOON. Seriously, I’m so sad I put it off for so long as well. I just quickly forgot about how awesome The Archived was, I guess, but from page 1 of The Unbound I was ABSORBED.

I don’t think Rowan and Celaena will ever be more than friends, really. I only get friendship from them. I mean, it could twist and develop to something more, but I highly doubt that would happen. Rowan is too… dutiful? I guess.

Oh god, Rob and Scarlet absolutely kill the shipping wars. They hurt so good. There’s a quote from Rob when they’re separated when he says “the shadows aren’t the same without you, love” AND I DIE. Brb sobbing.

  7. How could you do THIS to me?!

That celaena/chaol quote punched me right in the feels and I can’t even. ASDFGHJKL.

I can’t believe that is the only book I read in this post. Really need to get started on Scarlet

  8. Hmmmm, I want to say that I do this, but, though I loved these books and some of these ships, I actually don’t recognize most of the quotes at all. Maybe I have different lines or it’s my terrible memory at work or I just don’t really do this. Very interesting, though. *ponders self*

    • I didn’t really think about how I do this – I guess it’s a subconscious thing – until freaking The Unbound happened. But I’ve always had it with Finnick and Annie. “She crept up on me,” KILLS ME. It’s also kind of a Tumblr thing I think? Some people in fandoms always associate a quote with a ship and use that as a tag, and I guess I kind of carried that over from my Tumblr days.
