Book Review: The Vanishing Throne by Elizabeth May

Book Review: The Vanishing Throne by Elizabeth May

Ever since I fell in love with The Falconer almost two years ago, I’ve been anxious to read the sequel. Yeah, it took me a while to get to it, which I’m hitting myself for, but there. I read it. And it was awesome. Arguably, The Vanishing Throne is very much a middle book. There is a fair share of action, and there are a lot of revelations that are driving the series to the next conflicts and battles. But it is kind of an in-between phase that is much more about character building. Aileana comes into this book and is thrust into traumatic events: […]

Book Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Book Review: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

Ever since I read Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass, I knew that she was an author to keep up with. This woman is a storytelling master, creating such awesome characters, plots, and worlds that you just can’t help falling in love with. With each book of hers that I read, my love expands even more, and A Court of Thorns and Roses cements her as one of my all-time favorite authors. This creative Beauty and the Beast retelling is an absolute treat. A Court of Thorns and Roses is brilliant as a retelling. I wasn’t quite expecting it to stick so close to the […]

ARC Book Review: The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

ARC Book Review: The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

I don’t typically read a lot of paranormal books, so I had never yet experienced Holly Black – a pretty big name author in YA. The opportunity to read The Darkest Part of the Forest came about thanks to BEA, and faeries are probably the paranormal creatures I’m most likely to like, so I was really excited to try it out. The result? Well it’s a creative story and world for sure, but it lacked a kind of emotional resonance with me. Hazel and Ben live in a town bordering a forest inhabited by faeries. Faeries are just as pesky and terrifying as all the […]

ARC Book Review: Jackaby by William Ritter

ARC Book Review: Jackaby by William Ritter

I start this review with a very heavy heart. No one is more upset than I am about this dismal rating. Though I would never say this book is bad or the worst, I had fully expected to absolutely adore it and be head over heels for it. I’m immensely disappointed, because this book was just average at best and a cheap knockoff at worst. To be fair: Jackaby is upfront about what it is – Sherlock meets Doctor Who. That blurb is what caught my attention and the reason why I picked it up, because as my friends probably know, I am a HUGE […]

Book Review: The Falconer by Elizabeth May

Book Review: The Falconer by Elizabeth May

The Falconer is… whoa. Just WHOA. This is a debut? Are you kidding me? I’m addicted, I loved every second, and I want more. First point of love in this beautiful book with its lovely cover is the unstoppably fierce main character, Aileanna. Holy crap do I love Aileanna. She takes badass to a whole new level. She actually toes the line of morality. She kills faeries and actively loves it. I love a good vengeance story, and with her memories of her mother’s brutal and horrible death, it’s understandable where she’s coming from. I sympathized with her and was drawn into her mission. I […]
